What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

PTSD is a type of mental health disorder, related to anxiety, caused by either experiencing trauma or witnessing it in others. Symptoms of PTSD may include:

  • Feeling on high alert and quick to react to anxiety or stressful events.
  • Dreams, daydreams, thoughts, or reliving the event.
  • Panic attacks when feeling overwhelmed or scared.
  • Experiencing bursts of stress and anxiety as severe as when the event(s) occurred.
  • Changing lifestyle or behaviors to avoid anything related to the event(s).
  • Negative patterns of thinking and mood associated with the trauma

Many people describe living with PTSD as living constantly on edge. There may be periods of calmness, where life feels normal. But different experiences, sounds, thoughts, and situations may trigger severe, often difficult-to-control levels of stress and anxiety.

What Causes PTSD?

Post-traumatic stress disorder typically comes from living through trauma. It may be one single, traumatic event, like a violent assault. It may also be caused by living in a stressful situation for an extended period of time, such as being deployed in a war or being in an abusive relationship.

PTSD can also be caused by witnessing a traumatic event or living through one. The changes of the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, has caused some symptoms of PTSD in people, even in situations where they did not experience any significant life change.
